How to Spot a Deepfake Voice: ElevenLabs Explains How to Verify Audio
ElevenLabs published an explanation of how fake voice detection works and how to check whether audio was generated by its service.
Why it matters
Artificial voices are becoming more and more like real ones. Such recordings can be used for scams, fake messages, or deception. That is why it is important to be able to check whether a person actually recorded the sound.
In its blog, ElevenLabs explains how deepfake audio detection works. The company describes two approaches and how they differ: watermarking and statistical classifiers.
Two approaches to checking
A watermark is a hidden mark embedded in audio when it is created. It cannot be heard, but special tools can detect it.
A statistical classifier analyzes the sound itself and estimates whether it resembles AI-generated audio. This method does not need a mark, but its results are probabilistic.
How to verify audio
The ElevenLabs material also describes how to check whether audio was created by their service. This is useful if you come across a suspicious recording and want to understand where it came from.
