Why Brand Visibility in ChatGPT Can't Be Measured with a Single Number

One check of whether AI mentions your company says little, because chatbot answers can vary from query to query.

A Story About a Law Firm

Imagine a law firm that has been working on its website for years. Its expert articles on military law rank at the top of Google, and it consistently gets plenty of visitors from search. The head of the firm decided to check what AI knows about the company and typed into ChatGPT: “Recommend a military law attorney.”

The answer included several names and firm names, but his company was not among them. A week later, a colleague entered a similar query, and this time the company was mentioned.

Why One Check Doesn't Reveal the Truth

This story shows a simple thing: AI's answer can change. The same type of question, asked on a different day or in different words, produces a different result. So a single query and a single answer cannot show how well known a brand is to a chatbot.

To get the full picture, you need to check many times, with different wordings, and at different times. Only then can you see how often the company is mentioned and in which situations.
