Llama for Windows: a local AI assistant that runs on your own PC
The free Llama app for Windows 11 lets you run an AI model directly on your PC, with no cloud, no terminal and no admin rights needed.
What the app is
The llama.cpp team and Hugging Face have released Llama for Windows 11. The app lives in the system tray, the area by the clock in the bottom-right corner of the screen. It recommends models that fit your particular PC and runs them for you.
To start chatting with a local model, press Alt+Space. You can do this from any app.
How it works with other apps
The app runs a local server on your computer. Other applications, such as a coding agent, an editor or your own script, can connect to it at localhost:9931/v1. The server is compatible with the OpenAI format, so many tools connect to it without extra setup.
Models are stored in the usual Hugging Face cache. You don't need to download the same model separately for each app. One 20 GB download is shared by all your apps.
Why it's convenient
Installing and running it requires no terminal and no administrator rights. Requests are processed on your computer, not in the cloud. The app is free and open source, so you can review its code on GitHub.
