France launches a literary prize for books written together with AI
The new French Prix Pascal will reward novels written with the help of artificial intelligence and requires authors to disclose which AI tools they used.
What the prize is
France has launched the Prix Pascal, a literary prize for works written together with artificial intelligence. It is named after the French mathematician and philosopher Blaise Pascal.
The main difference from ordinary contests is that writers must do more than submit a text. They have to explain which AI tools they used and how they worked with them.
Who can take part and what to submit
The contest is open to anyone who writes in French. Citizenship, place of residence, and having a publishing contract do not matter. In theory, a Ukrainian can take part if they write in French.
Authors must submit three materials at the same time:
1. A manuscript: an unpublished literary work in French.
2. A description of the initial idea: the concept the author started from.
3. A technical document: an explanation of which AI models, prompts, agents, and methods were used during writing.
The jury will judge mainly literary quality, style, and originality. The organizers say they are looking for works that may be useful to society, draw attention to important problems, or offer a new view of them.
Why it appeared now
The prize appeared amid debates about AI in literature. In September 2026, Canadian-Haitian writer Télicon Orélien was accused of extensively using AI while writing the novel Cʼétait ça ou mourir («Or this, or death»). He first denied the accusations, but the use of AI was later confirmed. The publisher said it did not know how large AI's role was, but ended its cooperation with the author.
The founders of Prix Pascal propose a different approach: instead of checking texts with AI detectors, writers openly disclose how they used the technology. According to them, this makes it possible to discuss the role of AI in creativity openly.
What the announcement does not say
The short announcement does not specify the prize amount or application deadlines. Before taking part, it is worth checking the conditions on the prize's official website.
