Grok published the first episode of an AI-generated video based on 'The Odyssey', which Elon Musk had promised as a 'historically accurate' adaptation, and a critic says it lacks artistry and human emotion.

What happened

Three months after Elon Musk said Grok would make a full-length, 'historically accurate' version of 'The Odyssey', the service published seven minutes of video. The company calls it 'Episode 1' of its Odyssey series.

The video was made with Grok Imagine in collaboration with Wonder Studios and director Dev Walker. TechCrunch's Anthony Ha writes that it looks better than he expected, but the characters speak modern English rather than ancient Greek, and the narrator has a British accent.

How it differs from Christopher Nolan's film

Musk previously criticized Christopher Nolan's version of 'The Odyssey' for casting nonwhite and transgender actors. Nolan calls himself 'a techno-skeptic'.

Nolan's film was released in July. It was shot in six countries with thousands of cast and crew members. It sold out IMAX screenings for months and is seen as a likely front-runner for the next Academy Awards.

What the critic thinks

According to the author, the AI video has a few convincing shots but feels empty overall: there is no sense of momentum and no reason to care about the characters. He found himself waiting for it to end, like a video game cutscene he would skip. He sat through nearly three hours of Nolan's film without losing interest.
