OpenAI Reports New Scientific Results in Mathematics, Computer Science and Physics

OpenAI has published two scientific texts created with its AI and announced physics results that external experts are still reviewing.

What happened

A few weeks ago, OpenAI published over 700 pages of solutions to 372 mathematical problems. Now the company has announced a new wave of results that cover not only mathematics but also theoretical computer science and physics.

Two new texts on GitHub

Two new scientific texts from OpenAI are already available on GitHub. The first is in mathematics: it contains a proof of Sogge's local smoothing for waves in every spatial dimension. This is a well-known conjecture about the behavior of solutions to the wave equation.

The second is in computer science. According to OpenAI, the AI provided a proof that the Exponential Time Hypothesis (ETH) is false. ETH was considered true and served as the basis for hundreds of studies in databases, computational biology and geometry. If the disproof holds up, it could pave the way for more efficient algorithms for hard computational problems.

Notably, the scientists who originally proposed ETH are now part of the expert group analyzing OpenAI's model results.

Physics: no summary yet

The physics results concern proofs for interacting quantum field theories with gauge fields and fermions in four dimensions. The physics group has not yet published final materials. Instead, they have set up a separate email address for questions about the research: YANGMILLS4D[@]gmail.com.

Who gets the credit

OpenAI says it will not claim academic authorship or scientific honors for discoveries made by its models. All credit and copyright for the prepared papers will remain with the participating experts. The experts will also be responsible for ensuring that the final publications properly credit all scientists, methods and ideas the model used.
