OpenAI is merging the Chat and Work tabs in ChatGPT

OpenAI is preparing a single tab in the ChatGPT desktop app where you can both discuss an idea and have the bot carry it out.

What changes

The ChatGPT desktop app currently has ChatGPT and Codex sections, and inside ChatGPT there are two tabs: Chat and Work. It's easy to get lost about where you are working and where your project is.

OpenAI told users in an email that it is preparing to merge the Chat and Work tabs into one. According to the company, the new experience will first be available to select users for feedback before it is rolled out widely.

The company says that in one place you will be able to go from an idea to having it carried out. You can add your files and plugins and ask ChatGPT to build a website, create a presentation, or do things for you on the web, while reviewing and guiding its work.

Codex and usage limits

Codex will remain a separate section in the ChatGPT desktop app.

OpenAI also said that ChatGPT and Codex will draw from the same usage allowance pool. According to the company, this won't change anything for most users. However, depending on how people use it and which model they choose, some may need to wait for limits to reset more often.

Context

Rival Anthropic made a similar move in September, when it merged Claude's chat and Cowork functions into one screen.
