Siri gets access to third-party apps: what the voice assistant will be able to do
Apple lets Siri perform actions in third-party apps, not only its own, and the so-called Siri AI will better understand what you mean.
What is changing
Apple said that with the iOS 27.3 update, Siri will be able to carry out tasks in third-party apps. The update is rolling out as a Developer Preview, so regular users will see it later.
Developers will be able to integrate Siri AI's new features into their apps. The assistant will then be able to draw on your personal context, process natural language requests, and use on-screen awareness to complete them.
How it will work
The update adds a feature called «app skills», which lets developers combine several tasks into a single action. For example, you can request a ride, follow its status, and while you wait, say: «Hey Siri, change my ride pickup to a new address».
Apple says you won't have to mention an app's name in your request while it's in the foreground, during a Live Activity, or in a conversation with Siri about that app.
What Siri can do in Apple's own apps
The expanded capabilities are also coming to Apple's own apps: Calendar, Files, Finder, Journal, Mail, Maps, Messages, Music, Notes, Photos, Preview, Reminders, Safari, Shortcuts, and Weather.
According to Apple, you can ask Siri to find a coffee shop you visited last week or archive files you haven't opened in over a year. You can also ask Siri what it can do in each app.
Who this is for
For now, this mainly concerns developers and people testing new iOS versions. If you use an iPhone, it's worth watching for the public release to see which features appear in your favorite apps.
