Nexus Mods will require mod authors to disclose whether they used AI

The largest PC gaming mod site is making AI-use disclosure mandatory for new mod uploads, but it is not introducing an outright ban.

What is changing

Nexus Mods, the site where PC gamers find and download game modifications, is making disclosure of AI use mandatory. Authors of new mods must now declare whether they used artificial intelligence in their work. The site announced this as part of a large post about AI-generated content on the platform.

Mods tagged as "AI-assisted" must also include a public explanation of how and where AI was used. AI tags will also be more prominent on mod pages.

Why there is no ban

Site owner Victor "Foledinho" Folmann says the platform is "pro-human creativity" but will not introduce an outright ban on AI-generated mods. AI is now used at every stage of creation, from script autocompletion to generating textures, voices, and full assets, and it is hard to draw a clear line between acceptable and unacceptable use.

He says a ban would not remove AI from the modding process, only stop people from mentioning it. The site wants AI use to be open, clearly labelled, and regulated under its platform rules.

Other planned changes

Nexus Mods says it will not use mods to train AI and will not sell or license them to anyone doing so. The site is also working on clearer control over how others can reuse mods and stronger attribution when one mod uses another author's mod with permission.

The Recently Added section is changing too. Some authors upload many mods at once, pushing others down the page. The site plans to limit how many mods from one author are shown at a time and to apply tighter restrictions to uploads from new accounts. It is also launching controls to hide AI-generated content on game pages and the homepage, and later in search.

When it takes effect

Authors of existing mods have 60 days to update them to meet the new requirements. The grace period ends on January 2, after which the site will begin enforcing the rules.
