Off Grid AI: AI on your phone and computer that keeps your data to yourself
The free Off Grid AI app runs AI directly on your phone or computer, so your notes, meetings and email never reach someone else's servers.
What the app is
Most AI apps require your data to be on their servers: notes, meetings, emails. Off Grid AI takes a different approach: the models run on your own device. The developers say phones and laptops are now fast enough for this.
On a phone you can chat with AI, work with documents, photos and voice, and generate images. According to the authors, this works even with Wi-Fi off, and no account is needed to start.
What the computer version does
The computer version has all of the above, plus a "memory of your day". Meetings are transcribed directly on your device, and no bot joins the call.
You can ask, for example, "what did I promise Sam?" and the app answers with a link to its source, meaning the exact line from the conversation. The author of the news notes that this is useful, because they would want to see the original line next to the answer before acting on it.
Actions only with your approval
The app can draft an email, a ticket or an invitation. But nothing is sent until you confirm the action yourself.
Sync and developer features
Your phone can use larger models running on your Mac, directly between devices, without a developer-run server in between.
For programmers, the app provides one OpenAI-compatible API on your own computer for all downloaded models.
Free version and Pro
The free app is open source and its code can be viewed on GitHub. At the time of the news it had over 250,000 downloads and over 3,300 stars. The developers write: "The code is the privacy policy."
The paid Pro version adds memory, actions you approve, Sync, Vault and Clipboard across 5 devices. For launch day there is a discount: Pro lifetime costs $79.99 instead of $119. The developers ask users to report bugs, including the phone, the model and what happened.
