Free Zapyso app records and transcribes meetings without sending data to the internet
Sergii Borysliavskyi, Director of Digital Products at Vodafone Ukraine, created the free Zapyso app for iPhone and Mac, which makes meeting notes and transcripts directly on the device.
What this app is
Sergii Borysliavskyi, Director of Digital Products at Vodafone Ukraine, created the Zapyso app for iPhone and Mac. It records meeting audio, transcribes it, and creates AI notes. The main difference is that all of this happens on your phone or computer. Data is not sent to the cloud, and no internet connection is needed to work.
Borysliavskyi shared this on his social media. He said he wanted AI notes that don't send conversations to other companies' servers and don't require a subscription. Competing tools are mostly paid or send private conversations to third-party servers, so he built his own version and shared it.
What Zapyso can do
The app works with Ukrainian and English. It handles surzhyk and mixed-language speech, where both languages appear in one sentence.
After a meeting, Zapyso picks out key decisions, open questions, and next steps. Time phrases like "by Friday" are turned into specific dates. Each summary item has a timestamp, so you can jump straight to that moment in the recording.
The Mac version can detect when a call starts in Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, or Telegram and suggest starting a recording. It does not add third-party AI bots to the meeting. The desktop version also has voice input that automatically formats text in any app.
How it works and what you need
Zapyso uses the Parakeet model for speech recognition and the open Gemma model from Google for summaries. Both run only on your device's processor. You need the internet once to download the models, which total about 4 GB.
The app is completely free, with no ads or subscriptions. The iPhone version requires iOS 18. Summary generation is available on iPhone 15 Pro and newer. The Mac version is currently in public beta and requires an Apple Silicon processor.
