Siri Recaps on Apple Watch: useful, but a bit creepy

Apple's new Siri Recaps feature on Apple Watch records and summarizes conversations throughout the day, and the reviewer finds it useful despite privacy concerns.

What Apple added

Apple released the first developer beta versions of iOS 27.3 and watchOS 27.3 for testing. They bring four new AI features called Audio Intelligence. They work on Apple Watch Series 12 and can detect important sounds, identify songs, catch up on conversations, and take notes.

Two of the features raise no privacy concerns: sound detection and song identification. The first alerts you to sounds like an alarm or doorbell, which helps deaf and hard-of-hearing users. The second identifies a song using Shazam technology, something many people have already been doing on iPhone for nearly two decades.

What worries people

Two other features have sparked debate. Live Rewind lets you see what was said in the last 15 seconds. Siri Recaps records conversations around the watch owner, turns them into text, and writes short summaries of important things that were said.

Apple says it protects privacy. Audio is processed on the device when possible. The system does not identify speakers, does not store raw audio files, and redacts private information such as government ID numbers or account details.

How it works in practice

The reviewer tested Siri Recaps while dropping off a car for repairs and picking up a rental. Employees quickly shared times, prices, and policies. It was hard to write everything down during the conversation, but later that day Siri Recaps saved the key points: the deductible, the repair timeframe, and the amount of gas in the rental at the start.

However, the feature mixed these notes with home conversations about errands and babysitting schedules. It also saved small details, such as a plan to watch midterm election coverage on TV. The reviewer says this could feel invasive in more personal situations, so he is considering turning off Recaps at home in the evening.

What is missing

The reviewer would like different topics saved as separate notes or sections that can be exported or deleted on their own. He also asks for swipe-left deletion of a single bullet point, instead of using edit mode. Another wish is an option to automatically export saved Recaps to the Notes app in a dedicated folder.

Overall, the reviewer says he was not initially comfortable with the idea that his watch is always listening, but he sees the value of this kind of automated note-taking in everyday life.
