Airbnb is building an AI agent that plans trips and books stays

Airbnb plans to launch an AI agent in the first half of 2027 that will help users plan a trip and book it directly in the app.

What Airbnb is planning

Airbnb said in its shareholder letter for the third quarter of 2026 that it will launch an AI agent in the first half of 2027. The agent is meant to help people plan trips and book them.

Airbnb calls its planned service "AI-native," meaning it is built around AI from the start. The company says today's AI agents handle simple tasks well, such as booking a restaurant table or scheduling an appointment, but planning a trip is different.

How it will differ from a chat

Airbnb says a traditional chat window is not the right way to plan a trip. Instead, the agent will build the interface around the user's question.

To do this, the agent will draw on a library of hundreds of travel-specific interface elements, such as maps, photos, comparisons, calendars, and itineraries, and combine them in real time. The company says the agent will help guests explore options, make decisions with the people they travel with, and book directly in Airbnb.

Earlier comments

Co-founder and CEO Brian Chesky said earlier at the Skift Global Forum that an agent would arrive in 2027 with an interface that is "much richer than a chatbot."

In the shareholder letter, the company also wrote that AI is "the best thing to ever happen to Airbnb" and that it has changed how the company develops products and operates.
